How to choose the right size wall art for your space

The size of a piece of art largely determines how it looks in a room. A piece that's too small can blend in against the wall, while one that's too large can overwhelm the space. This blog post explains how to easily determine the right size based on the wall, furniture, and room dimensions.

1. Take the wall width into account
As a guideline, a piece of art should occupy approximately 60 to 75% of the width of the wall or piece of furniture it's hanging above. This creates visual balance.

2. Size advice per situation
• Above the sofa: width of the artwork = ± ⅔ of the sofa
• Above a sideboard or table: leave at least 20 cm space on both sides
• On a free wall: the work may be larger (for example 100 cm or more)

3. Large or small space?
A smaller room doesn't necessarily need small artwork. A slightly larger piece can actually make the room appear larger, provided there's enough open space around it.

4. Hanging height as part of the experience
The center of the artwork should ideally be hung at eye level, on average between 145 and 155 cm from the floor. For larger works, this can be slightly lower if they are placed above furniture.

5. Combine multiple works of art
When combining smaller works (for example, in a gallery wall), it's important that the overall composition has the same effect as a single, larger piece. Ensure equal spacing and carefully balance scale and proportion.

6. Popular formats

Room Recommended size
Living room wall 60 × 90 cm or larger
Above sofa or bed 80 × 120 cm (focused)
Hallway or narrow wall 40 × 60 cm vertical
Large open wall 100 cm or more, possibly as a statement piece

A good size ensures that the artwork becomes part of the space rather than simply decorative. When the proportions, height, and surrounding space are correct, the interior creates a sense of calm and balance.
