Why light is so decisive for the appearance of wall decoration
Light significantly influences how art is perceived in a space. Even a well-chosen artwork can be underperformed if the lighting isn't optimal. This blog post explores how light—both natural and artificial—affects the appearance of wall art and how to consider this when choosing or positioning artwork.
1. Natural light
Natural light usually provides the most realistic color reproduction. Note that direct sunlight can cause discoloration over time, especially with photo paper or canvas. Indirect daylight often works best because it has a calmer appearance and creates fewer reflections.
2. Artificial lighting
The color of the light also determines how a work of art comes across:
• Warm light (2700–3000K) enhances earth tones and natural materials
• Neutral light (3000–4000K) gives a balanced display
• Cooler light is used less in domestic spaces
Art can be highlighted with spotlights or wall lighting. Always position the light slightly angled towards the work to avoid harsh shadows or reflections.
3. Material and lighting effect
• Canvas: matte finish, sensitive to shadows
• Dibond: sleek and light-reflecting, remains clear in diffuse light
• Plexiglass: glossy and sensitive to reflections, best avoided in direct sunlight
4. Placement in relation to windows
Avoid hanging artwork directly opposite a window to avoid reflections. A position perpendicular to the light often works best. With window treatments like curtains or blinds, the light can be adjusted as needed.
5. Light as an enhancement of atmosphere
By strategically placing lighting, art can be subtly accentuated:
• Use focused light with a statement piece
• In a quiet room, indirect lighting is sufficient
• In dark corners, art can provide visual balance
When light, material, and position are perfectly coordinated, a work of art truly shines. It enhances not only the wall itself but the atmosphere of the entire space.
