How to position art above the sofa, table or bed
The correct placement of wall art significantly influences the overall look of a room. A well-chosen artwork truly shines when hung at the right height and position. This blog post explains how to professionally position art above a sofa, table, or bed, without hanging it too high or too low in the room.
1. General principle
The most common guideline is to hang the center of the artwork at eye level. On average, this is about 145 to 155 cm from the floor. This is especially true for walls that are not backed by furniture.
2. Above a sofa
– Hang the artwork approximately 20 to 25 cm above the backrest.
– Let the work take up about two-thirds of the width of the sofa for visual balance.
– Avoid cutting the work too small; as a guideline, a width of at least 60% of the bench is suitable.
3. Above a table or dresser
– Keep a distance of 15 to 20 cm between the furniture and the artwork.
– The composition works best when the work is centered on the piece of furniture.
– For multiple small works: leave sufficient space between the images and ensure that the whole remains at eye level.
4. Above a bed
– Don't hang the artwork too high; about 20 cm above the headboard is a safe guideline.
– For horizontal works, the artwork can easily be wider than the bed frame, as long as it does not extend beyond the wall planes.
– For vertical work: choose a size that is in proportion to the height of the room.
5. Proportion and size
– Small spaces can benefit from one larger work instead of several small images.
– The artwork may be 60 to 90 cm wide in standard spaces.
– For large walls, a piece of art 100cm or more can create more impact.
6. Light and sight lines
Be careful with locations where direct sunlight will hit the artwork, especially with plexiglass or art paper. If in doubt, choose a spot with indirect light. Try to place the artwork where you'll naturally see it when you enter the room.
Good positioning enhances the artwork and the surrounding space. When height, distance, and proportion are balanced, a calm and cohesive interior is created.
