How to create a photo wall without it being too busy
A photo wall or gallery wall can add character to a space, but if the composition isn't right, it can quickly become too busy or cluttered. With the right structure, balance, and spacing, you can create a calm and cohesive whole. This blog post explains how to build a photo wall in a way that enhances the space.
1. Choose one style or line in the designs
Make sure all the works share a visual similarity. This could be in color, material, style, or image type. Mixing different styles often creates confusion.
2. Start from the center
Start with one central artwork and work outward from there. This keeps the composition balanced and prevents any "shifting" to one side.
3. Allow sufficient space
Leave an average of 5 to 8 cm of space between each artwork. For larger pieces, this can be slightly more. This way, the individual images remain visible and together they form a cohesive whole.
4. Limit the number
A gallery wall doesn't have to be large to be effective. Four to six works are often sufficient for a standard wall. More images are possible, but only if there's sufficient free space around them.
5. Combine formats
You can combine different formats, as long as there's a clear alignment. For example, the height should be the same, the top line should be the same, or the image should be centered on a single central axis.
6. Colors in balance
Preferably use a single base color in multiple images, or keep the composition simple when one of the works is more striking. Don't let all the works compete for attention.
When a photo wall is carefully constructed, it doesn't create a cluttered look, but rather a cohesive whole that fits the space. Structure and proportion determine the final result.
